Forwards Not Backwards

Occasionally trads will get into a discussion about the merits of pre-1962 missals, compared to the 1962 itself.  I usually see two common positions taken.  On the one hand, some trads don’t want to have anything to do with a missal that Archbishop Bugnini ever got his mitts on so they reject everything from 1955 [...]

Confraternity of St. Benedict

My good friend John R. has taken the initiative to establish a Divine Office association called the Confraternity of Saint Benedict.  In a nut shell this is an association for both lay and clerical members with the aim of fostering use of the traditional Office both at home in and in public services (especially Vespers [...]

The Truth about Octaves

Posted: Thursday, December 18th, 2008 @ 11:06 pm in Liturgical Calendar, Liturgy | 1 Comment »

It’s no secret to anyone who reads this blog that I like octaves. I frequently point them out for various feasts. One thing I like most about octaves is that they give you more time to dwell on important feast days. Times are hectic, especially if you have kids. Days come [...]

All Souls Mass

Posted: Monday, November 3rd, 2008 @ 11:03 pm in Liturgy | No Comments »

I had the good fortune to be able to assist at the mass at mass for the Commemoration of the Departed. I had never been to it before, and I must say it was quit moving. I did consider Ash Wednesday mass the most moving, but All Souls is right up there. [...]

Shifting the Gospels

There has been a lot of things I’ve wanted to post about, but I just have too much going on right now. I probably won’t be able to post much for the next couple of months. That aside…
I read in the Liturgical Year that the 4th Sunday after Pentecost used to be called [...]

Pamphlet Reminder

Summorum Pontificum goes into full effect today.  If you would like to encourage others to learn more about the traditional rites of the Church, feel free to print, copy, and distribute this pamphlet.  You may also post it on our own web site, link to it on this site, and send it to anyone who [...]

Extraordinary Form Pamphlet

One of things that irks me about responses to Summorum Pontificum is when people (especially bishops) imply that virtually no one is interested in the traditional rites (e.g. “this is for a tiny minority of Catholics,” or “Most faithful are happy with the new mass, but…”). Sometimes they even specifically say 1%.
I don’t think [...]

He that is mighty hath done great things to me

Last night I had the good fortune to be able to attend the Mater Ecclesiae Mass of thanksgiving at the cathedral of the Camden NJ diocese. It was a truly beautiful event, and an instance of giving God our very best. Many people sacrifice a great deal of time, money, and effort to [...]

There is still a long way to go

After two weeks I am still as pleased as anyone about the Motu Proprio. I am aware of the various concerns and confusions that have come up, but I simply don’t believe with they prove serious problems.
However, we must not let our guard down. We must not stop praying for liturgical restoration. [...]

‘62 Missal Motu Proprio Edition

If you don’t have traditional missal yet, go to the Baronius Press website and check out their new Motu Prorprio edition to be published in September. From their site:
Following the Holy Father’s Motu Proprio on the 7th July 2007, Baronius Press, the only publisher of a Church approved edition of the 1962 Roman Missal, [...]
